No es fácil hacer retratos por las calles de Madrid, a la gente no le gusta. Francamente, no sé cómo se las apañaba la gran Lisette Model para hacer sus maravillosos retratos callejeros.

El chico de la foto debajo es Newton Kenke, cantante reggae-dancehall, y paseaba por la calle Fuencarral. Me gustó su rostro y tuve que convencerle para que se dejara hacer un par de disparos, no le apetecía mucho la idea. Al señor del kiosko de lotería no le pedí permiso, barruntando un no por delante, simplemente me acerqué (con un 35mm), disparé y me fui. Su rostro inmóvil no se movió un ápice, daba la impresión de llevar horas en la misma postura, escrutando el trajín de la gente por la Gran Vía.

It’s not easy to shoot portraits in the streets of Madrid, people simply don’t like it. Frankly, I don’t know how the great Lisette Model managed to shoot her marvellous street portraits. The boy below is Newton Kenke, a reggae-dancehall singer, and he was strolling in Fuencarral Street. I liked his features and I had to convince him to pose for a casual portrait, he didn’t like too much the idea. Instead I didn’t ask permission to the man inside the lottery stall, I feared a no as an answer, I just got nearer (with a 35mm), I shot and I left. His motionless face didn’t move not even a wink. I got the impression that he had stayed for hours without moving a muscle, peeping out people in Gran Vía.
