Palermo respira actividad comercial por todos sus poros. Pero las compras no se hacen en centros comerciales. Aunque hay un Zara, aquí sería difícil que triunfara un Corte Inglés. No, la principal actividad comercial de ropa se hace en los mercados callejeros, en el barrio de Capo, o en tiendas tradicionales.
Commerce is one of the main activities in Palermo but shopping doesn’t take place in malls or fancy shops. People go mainly to Capo district where a flourishing clothes market spreads on the streets.
Life in Palermo streets
Palermo, como toda ciudad mediterránea que se precie, vive en sus calles. Y la proximidad más meridional al sur hace que la vida en las calles sea todavía más activa que en las ciudades mediterráneas españolas. Estas fotos están tomadas en el barrio de Ballarò, en pleno centro histórico, que es el único sitio en que vale la pena vivir en Palermo. La ciudad nueva es algo anodino, como cualquier ciudad europea.
As any Mediterranean town, Palermo has a vibrant life in the streets. In the Mediterranean area the more to the south the more active is life in the streets, even more lively than in the Spanish towns. These pictures are taken in Ballarò area, in the core of the historical centre which is the only place worth of living in Palermo. The new town is sort of anodyne, as any European town.
Ballarò market
Palermo es una ciudad rica en mercados al aire libre. De hecho, me parece que no hay ninguno cubierto. Mercados de antigüedades, de ropa, rastrillos, etc. Pero por encima de todo están los mercados de comida, imprescindibles, con una calidad estupenda. Se nota que a los palermitanos no sólo les gusta comer, sino que les gusta comer bien. Ballarò es el mayor mercado de comida en Palermo, no tan grande ni tan impresionante como la Pescheria de Catania, pero tiene esa indiscutible atmósfera mediterránea.
Palermo hosts lots of open air markets. Flea markets, clothes, etc. but above all there are the food markets. They are essential, with a very good quality. People in Palermo like to eat but they like to eat well. Ballarò is the biggest food market. Not so big as Pescheria in Catania but it has that unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere.

Con estas fotitos termino la serie de los mercados de Catania, y el próximo post ya será de Palermo, donde me he instalado para todo el mes de mayo. A partir de entonces, alimentar el blog con fotos se está volviendo algo problemático por un incidente que ya os contaré otro día.
With these pictures, I end the series on the Catania markets. Next post will be from Palermo, where I have settled for the whole month of May. From then on, it will be more difficult to feed photos to the blog due to an incident. I will tell you another day.
La siguiente foto muestra una escena muy habitual en las calles sicilianas: un grupo de hombres plantado en la calle, sin hacer otra cosa que charlar o mirar, o haciendo las dos cosas al mismo tiempo.
The following picture shows a very common scene in the Sicilian streets – a group of men standing in the street just chatting or looking around or doing both things.
