El Kunsthaus Tacheles, centro de arte alternativo, es un edificio singular de Berlín. Fue construido en 1907 como centro comercial, un concepto muy nuevo en la época. Tras la caída del Muro de Berlín en 1989 fue ocupado por artistas que se instalaron ahí y abrieron talleres, estudios de arte, un night club y un cine. La municipalidad seguía adelante con sus planes de demoler todo el edificio por estar en la ruina. El grupo de artistas ocupantes, sin embargo, encargó un estudio que demostró que el edificio gozaba de muy buena salud, así que la demolición se paró. El Tacheles se convirtió en parte esencial de la escena artística, de cultura alternativa y de comunicación, no sólo alemana sino internacional. Hoy en día, el futuro del Tacheles es incierto.

The Kunsthaus Tacheles is an alternative art center in Berlin. It was originally built in 1907 as a department store in the Jewish quarter. After the Berlin Wall had come down it was taken over by artists, who called it Tacheles, a Yiddish word for «straight talking.»The building contains ateliers and workshops, a nightclub, and a cinema. On February 13, 1990, two months before the planned demolition of the entire building, the group Künstlerinitative Tacheles occupied the building. The group tried to prevent the demolition through discussions with the building management in Berlin-Mitte by registering the building as an historic place. The artists’ initiative had a new engineering survey done to evaluate the building’s structural integrity. The study found that the building was in surprisingly good shape, and it was named a historic landmark shortly thereafter. Now, the future concept for the building remains undecided.
