Still Sevilla
Me despido de Sevilla con un guiño a la calle Sierpes. Antes reflejaba el comercio de la maravillosa artesanía sevillana, ahora es punto neurálgico de la moda internacional, qué le vamos a hacer.
I say goodbye to Sevilla with a wink to Sierpes Street. It used to exhibit the best shops of the famous Sevillian craftsmanship, but now it’s a central point of the international fashion.
Luis Camacho style
Luis Camacho, además de ser un buen fotógrafo trabaja sus fotos de calle en los mismos ámbitos que yo, así que es difícil sustraerse a su influjo. Esta foto es un buen ejemplo de lo que digo.
Besides being a very good photographer, Luis Camacho shoots his street photos in the same places than me. So it’s difficult to avoid his influence. This picture is a pertinent example.
Night walk
La parte vieja de Madrid, lo que llaman el Madrid de los Austrias, hay que pasearla de noche, cuando las sombras añaden misterio a las cosas más sencillas, cuando las calles están calmas y la gente no se apresura.
The old part of Madrid, what they call «Austrian quarter» in honour of the ancient dynasty of kings, has to be visited by night. Then shadows add mystery to the simplest things, streets are quiet and people don’t hustle.
Constantine Manos’s style
Es imprescindible citar aquí una reflexión de Jim Jarmusch: «Nada es original. Roba de todo aquello que destile inspiración o que alimente tu imaginación. Devora viejas películas, nuevas películas, conversaciones oidas al azar, arquitectura, puentes, señales de tráfico, árboles, nubes, corrientes de agua, luces y sombras. Elige para robar sólo aquello que hable directamente a tu alma. Si lo haces, tu trabajo (y tu robo) será auténtico. La autenticidad es inestimable, la originalidad es inexistente. Y no te molestes en esconder tu robo, celébralo si te apetece.»
Así que yo también robo lo que puedo. De las fotografías que siguen, tengo que decir que están tomadas de todo un estilo moderno de fotografía de calle que se expresa a través de fuertes colores, sombras y luces, como Constantine Manos, Dimitri Mellos y otros que el colectivo «Calle 35» califica muy acertadamente de «explosión callejera griega» en su blog. Claro que el chiaroscuro pictórico ya está inventado hace siglos ….
It’s essential to quote here a thought of Jim Jarmusch: «Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it.»
In consequence, I also steal what I can. The photos that follow have been stolen from a certain modern style of street photography which expresses itself through strong colour, shadows and lights, like Constantine Manos, Dimitri Mellos and others. But of course, the «chiaroscuro» was invented many centuries ago….
