En el sur de Etiopía fuimos a ver el famoso “salto de toros”, de la tribu Hamer, que es un ritual de iniciación de los muchachos que han alcanzado la edad para casarse, 16 ó 17 años. El chico tiene que saltar una hilera de unos 10 bueyes, cuatro veces, completamente desnudo. Cuando fuimos nosotras me extrañó ver que el saltador tenía ya una edad, vamos, que se le había pasado el arroz. Pregunté al guía: tenía 35 añazos. Luego le he visto fotografiado haciendo diferentes “saltos” en distintos folletos turísticos, incluso puede verse en YouTube en una grabación de 2010 … Ese día seríamos unos 20 turistas viendo el ritual de los latigazos a las muchachas y el famoso “salto”. Cada turista pagaba una cantidad sustanciosa por ver el espectáculo, 20 dólares, y el día anterior había habido otro ritual, y probablemente al día siguiente también. No creo que haya tantos muchachos casaderos en cada poblado …. El ritual ha devenido espectáculo gracias a que todos pagamos por verlo, mea culpa.

In South Ethiopia we went to see the famous “bull jumping” in a Hamer village, which is a rite of passage for men coming of age. I don’t think that Hamer village has so many boys coming of age … The ritual has become a show because we all pay for seeing it, “mea culpa”.
