A secret garden in Madrid
Madrid no es ciudad de muchos encantos secretos, a diferencia de Roma por ejemplo. Es una ciudad abierta y plana, ves lo que hay y eso es todo. Pero en el barrio de los Austrias hay una joyita escondida que no mucha gente conoce. Es el jardín del Príncipe de Anglona, al que se entra por la Plaza de la Paja. El pequeño jardín se diseñó a mediados del siglo XVIII como anexo al Palacio del Príncipe de Anglona adyacente, y en invierno tiene un toque de cierta atractiva desolación que evoca la preciosa novela de Frances Hodgson Burnett, «El jardín secreto».
Madrid is not a town of secret charms, not like Rome, for instance. It’s an open town in which you see what you got and that’s all. However, in the old «Austrian Quarter», called after the reign of the Hapsburgs, you find a small hidden jewel unknown to many people. It is the Prince of Anglona’s Garden, to which you enter through Plaza de la Paja. The small garden was designed in the XVIII century as an annex to the attached Palace of the Prince. In wintertime the garden gets a touch of a certain bleakness which strongly reminds the great novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, «The secret garden».
Night walk
La parte vieja de Madrid, lo que llaman el Madrid de los Austrias, hay que pasearla de noche, cuando las sombras añaden misterio a las cosas más sencillas, cuando las calles están calmas y la gente no se apresura.
The old part of Madrid, what they call «Austrian quarter» in honour of the ancient dynasty of kings, has to be visited by night. Then shadows add mystery to the simplest things, streets are quiet and people don’t hustle.

With a little help …
Sí, ya sé lo que dicen los maestros de la fotografía, que con una mala cámara se pueden hacer buenas fotos. Pero si tienes una buena lente en una buena cámara, pues mejor que mejor. En el caso de estas dos fotos, las hice anoche con un objetivo de una calidad extraordinaria, el Canon 28mm f/1,8, sobre una 5D.
I know what the great photographers say, that you can get a good picture with a bad gear. But … if you get a good lens on a good camera, well, so much the better. I shot the photos below yesterday night with a fantastic lens, the Canon 28mm f/1.8 on a 5D.
